Over the years, Windows OS has improved a lot in design as well as functionality.
With the release of Windows 11, we get to see a much cleaner interface and features that are better than ever before.
Not to forget, the performance also improves with the upgrade, so if you’re currently using Windows 10, you’ll see a notable difference when you switch up.
With all the new features and interface design, there’s a possibility of being confused in certain areas. For example, not knowing how to customize or disable the Windows 11 lock screen.
If that’s your exact concern, then you don’t have to worry anymore because I’ll show you the easiest way to do that in this post.

Introduction to Windows Lock Screen
Windows introduced the lock screen feature in its 8th version and has carried on until the 11th version. This feature is expected to stay in the newer versions as well.
A lock screen is basically the screen you land on as soon as you turn on the device. It displays information such as:
- Time/date
- Background
- Preferred apps
And as well as an option to enter the password to unlock the device and proceed to the home screen.
Why Would You Want to Change the Lock Screen Background?
Depending upon each individual, there can be various reasons behind replacing your default lock screen background.
If it’s for personal purposes, it can mostly be due to being bored of seeing the same old wallpapers. Or if you just want to set backgrounds of your own choice.
On the other hand, if you’re a business, you’d want to make sure the background contains an element of your own branding. So, replacing the default background with your company’s background would be a good option.
This ensures proper branding of your business. That being said, let’s learn how to go about doing that seamlessly.
Customizing Windows 11 Lock Screen Background
Fiddling with the lock screen on Windows 11 and changing the background is quite a simple process. Here are the steps for it:
Step 1: From the start menu, go to Settings.

Step 2: Click on Personalization.

Step 3: You’ll notice there are various different customization options. You can change the background, colors, fonts, themes, etc. Since we want to change the background of the lock screen, let’s click where it says “Lock screen”.

Step 4: Now, when you click on the drop-down menu, you’ll get 3 options:
- Windows spotlight
- Picture
- Slideshow

The Windows spotlight is basically an option that, by default, will display beautiful photography automatically. Besides turning it on, you do not need to do anything. It all happens by itself. The images change daily.
Next, the Picture option allows you to add your own static picture as your background. You can choose any picture from your gallery and put it as your lock screen background.
Finally, the Slideshow option allows you to display an entire album of pictures that keeps running as a slideshow on the lock screen background.
For this example, I’ll be going for the Picture option so that I can add my own static picture as the background.
Step 5: Once you’re on the Picture option, you’ll get an option to upload the picture from your gallery or choose one of the sample pictures.

Once you choose either of the two, you’ll notice the lock screen background has been successfully changed.
Disabling Windows 11 Lock Screen
Even though it’s a nice feature to have, not everyone might want this. If you’re one of those people who do not prefer having the lock screen, then you can simply disable it.
There can be various reasons behind not wanting to use a lock screen. Some of the common ones are:
- When you want to enter Windows directly, resulting in faster access
- When you don’t want to spend time remembering and entering passwords
- When you want your laptop/computer to be accessed by everybody (especially in an office environment
NOTE: Disabling the lock screen does not remove the login screen. It just removes the first page you see when you turn on your device. If you wish, you can also remove the login screen if privacy is not your concern.
There are several ways of disabling the lock screen on Windows 11. Here are the steps for two of the easiest ways:
Method 1: Using Group Policy Editor (GPE)
Group Policy Editor is an important Windows administration tool, using which you can also disable the lock screen. Here are the steps you need to follow:
Step 1: On your keyboard, press the Windows icon + R to launch the run command.
Step 2: Now, type gpedit.msc and hit the enter key or click OK.
Step 3: You’ll see the Group Policy Editor will open. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization.

Step 4: Double-click on where it says, “Do not display the lock screen”.
Step 5: A new window opens; click on where it says “Enabled” if it’s not selected by default. Next, click on Apply, and then finally, click on OK.

Now, you can restart your system and check that the changes took place successfully.
Method 2: Using a Third-party App
If you don’t want to mess around with the above method, you can use a third-party app to do it for you instantly and in much less time.
I recommend using this free app called WinAeroTweaker. Here are the steps for it:
Step 1: Download, install, and launch the solution.
Step 2: Click on Disable Lock Screen under Boot and Logon.
Step 3: Click on the Disable Lock Screen checkbox.

Restart your computer to check if the changes were applied successfully.

Disabling Windows 11 Sign-in Password Requirement
After you’ve disabled the lock screen, if you also want to disable the login screen (password login) and head straight to your home screen instead, you can follow the below simple steps:
Step 1: Go to Settings > Accounts.

Step 2: Click on the Sign-in options.

Step 3: Click the drop-down icon on If you’ve been away, when should Windows require you to sign in again? and select Never.

The password login requirement will now be disabled on your system.
Final Words
Although it’s a personal choice whether or not to disable the lock screen and login screen of your Windows 11 computer, personally, I have mine disabled because of the fact that I am the only one who uses it.
On top of that, it saves you time and makes things convenient.
Next, try out these settings you should tweak in Windows 11 for the best experience.
