Gemini CLI Is Here: AI Assistance Comes to Your Terminal

Google has rolled out Gemini CLI, which is an open-source AI agent that brings its powerful Gemini models directly to the command line. It is built for developers who prefer working in the terminal; Gemini CLI offers an AI-first experience that supports coding, content generation, task automation, and more, all from a single prompt.
Gemini in the Terminal
The command line is the core workspace for developers, and Gemini CLI claims to upgrade that experience by enabling natural language interactions right from the terminal. If you are a developer, then you can use it to write or debug code, fetch real-time data using Google Search integration, automate tasks, or even manage files. It’s all powered by the Gemini 2.5 Pro model with a massive 1 million token context window.
Currently, the Gemini CLI is available in preview, and you can access it for free with a personal Google account via a Gemini Code Assist license. The free tier includes 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 daily requests.
Built on Gemini Code Assist, Now with Agent Mode
Gemini CLI is built using the same underlying tech that powers Gemini Code Assist, which is Google’s AI coding assistant available in VS Code. Developers using either platform now benefit from Gemini’s agent mode, where the AI builds multi-step plans, recovers from failed implementations, and suggests solutions on its own. This feature is available to all users across free, Standard and Enterprise plans via the Insiders channel.
Open-Source and Extensible by Design
The biggest highlight of Gemini CLI is that it’s fully open-source under the Apache 2.0 license. It allows developers to inspect, modify, and extend the tool. It also supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and includes prompt customization and system-level configuration support using GEMINI.md.
For advanced users, Gemini CLI can be integrated into custom scripts for non-interactive use, providing automation capabilities within developer workflows.
Imagen 4 Now in Gemini API
Along with the Gemini CLI, Google also confirmed that Imagen 4, its next-generation text-to-image model, is now available in the Gemini API. Imagen 4 supports high-quality, photorealistic image generation and brings strong consistency and caption alignment. While not part of Gemini CLI directly, it’s an important addition to the broader Gemini ecosystem for developers building AI-first apps.
