ChatGPT’s Image Gen is Now Free for All— Users Are Flooding It with Ghibli Art

OpenAI’s image-generation feature is finally available for all free-tier ChatGPT users. CEO Sam Altman announced this update in a tweet. The feature was previously only available for paid subscribers. This update allows anyone to create AI-generated visuals simply by providing text prompts.
The feature, powered by GPT-4o, has proven adept at producing highly stylized images, including photorealistic and artistic creations. However, its unexpected ability to replicate Studio Ghibli’s iconic aesthetic has turned it into a viral phenomenon. Social media platforms like X and Instagram are flooded with Ghibli-style renditions of selfies, pets, and everyday objects.
Inspired by the famous Japanese animation studio Ghibli, the Ghibli-style trend saw users generate AI art that mimicked the signature soft, dreamlike aesthetics of classics like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. The sheer volume of these creations took over social platforms, making it one of the biggest AI art trends in recent months.
How to Use ChatGPT to Create Ghibli-style Images?
- Open ChatGPT and log in using your registered email address.
- Write a detailed prompt like “A young girl standing on a grassy hill at sunset, overlooking a vast, magical valley with floating islands and waterfalls. The scene has soft, hand-painted textures, warm golden lighting, and a nostalgic, dreamlike atmosphere in Studio Ghibli style.”
- Submit your prompt, and ChatGPT will create an image based on your description.
- If needed, tweak your prompt or ask for edits, like changing colors or adding elements.
- Download your image and share it wherever you like!
Note: To convert your existing images into Studio Ghibli aesthetic, upload the picture and tell ChatGPT to “Ghiblify this image.”
With this rollout, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as a one-stop AI assistant, combining text and image capabilities under one platform. However, due to extremely high demand, ChatGPT might be unable to create Ghibli-style images back-to-back quickly and might ask to wait a few minutes.
But for now, one thing is clear: AI image generation is no longer a perk just for paid users, and the internet is already abuzz with it.
