DeepSeek App Suspended for Local Use in South Korea

- South Korea’s privacy commission removed the DeepSeek app from local app stores over data privacy concerns.
- Authorities are reviewing the app’s data handling, but it remains functional for existing users.
- Other countries, including Italy and Australia, have also restricted DeepSeek over security concerns.
DeepSeek, the latest AI sensation, has once again been in the news. Today, South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) announced that it has removed the popular Chinese AI app from the local versions of the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The app was taken down on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. (0900 GMT).
Why Was DeepSeek Removed from South Korean App Stores?
The primary reason for removing DeepSeek from local app stores is privacy concerns. The commission found that DeepSeek lacked transparency regarding the transfer of data to third parties and may have collected excessive personal information. As a result, the app was removed from the app stores, and South Korean authorities are currently reviewing its data handling practices to ensure compliance with local laws.
However, the app remains functional for users who have already installed it. Meanwhile, Seoul’s data protection agency has strongly advised people to “use the app with caution until the final results are announced.”
Will DeepSeek Return to South Korean App Stores?
The South Korean government has stated that DeepSeek may be reinstated once the necessary “improvements and remedies” are made to ensure compliance with the country’s personal data protection laws.
Additionally, South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, has described DeepSeek as a “shock” that could have far-reaching effects beyond AI, impacting the country’s industries.
Which Other Countries Have Banned DeepSeek?
Several countries have taken action against DeepSeek over concerns regarding data privacy and national security. Italy was among the first to remove the app from its local Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Additionally, countries such as Taiwan, Australia, and others have restricted the use of DeepSeek on all government devices.
Additionally, a recent Cisco report revealed that DeepSeek is also vulnerable to attacks. The report highlighted that the app has a 100% attack success rate, failing to block a single harmful prompt. This raises further concerns about the app’s security and its potential risks to users.
