NotebookLM Now Runs on Gemini 2.5 Flash — But That’s Not the Only Upgrade

Google’s AI-powered research and note-taking tool NotebookLM is again in the headlines. Now, the company has officially announced that NotebookLM is powered by the latest Gemini 2.5 Flash model. The company casually dropped the announcement via its official X handle, stating, “It’s been a busy week for us. So busy that we forgot to mention that @NotebookLM is officially powered by Gemini 2.5 Flash.”
The shift to Gemin 2.5 Flash thinking model is said to bring a major performance boost, especially for users tackling complex, multi-step reasoning tasks. Google referred to its new 2.5 models as “thinking models,” suggesting more accurate and comprehensive responses when engaging with tough questions in the Q&A module.
Smarter, Still Free
When a user on X asked whether the upgrade would enhance the audio generation, the NotebookLM team clarified, “This will currently only impact the Q&A but great feedback for our audio overview team.” Another user inquired if the new capabilities were part of the free tier, to which NotebookLM simply responded, “Yes!”
And it’s not just new tech under the hood—the NotebookLM team remains highly engaged with its user community. When one user urged them to “fix the podcasts,” calling it “the feature with the most potential,” the team replied, “What needs to be fixed???” showing a willingness to listen and improve.
Recent Updates Expand Language Support and Reach
However, NotebookLM is not just getting an AI model upgrade. Recently, the company announced that its Audio Overviews, one of the tool’s most popular features, now supports over 50 languages. The feature was originally launched last year and turns user-uploaded documents into podcast-style summaries. Now, with the latest update, it allows users to generate these summaries in their account’s preferred language, from Hindi and Afrikaans to Turkish and more.
In another move to widen access, Google confirmed that NotebookLM will soon launch a dedicated mobile app for both Android and iOS. The app is expected to roll out in the coming weeks, and the pre-registration for early adopters is already live. The mobile version aims to bring the full NotebookLM experience to users on the go, offering AI-powered summarization, Q&A, and document insights straight from your pocket.
So with the integration of Gemini 2.5 Flash, expanded language support, and an upcoming mobile app, NotebookLM is becoming a more versatile and intelligent assistant for researchers, writers, and students alike. Google’s continuous updates show it’s not just building an AI tool but evolving it into a smarter, more user-friendly platform.
