This AI Assistant from Microsoft Can Make Doctor’s Lives Easier – Find Out How

Clinicians

At the ongoing HIMSS 2025 in Las Vegas, Microsoft introduced its Dragon Copilot, a new AI-powered voice assistant designed to streamline clinical workflows. The tool integrates speech recognition with generative AI to automate documentation, face critical patient information, and reduce administrative burdens on healthcare professionals. So, let’s take a closer look at Microsoft’s latest offering:

What Is Dragon Copilot?

The Dragon Copilot is built on Microsoft’s existing speech recognition technology. But it’s now enhanced with generative AI and healthcare-adapted safeguards. The model is designed to work across electronic health records (EHRs) like Epic, allowing clinicians to dictate notes, retrieve patient history, and automate tasks in real-time.

According to the company, AI assistants can save an average of five minutes per patient encounter, potentially adding up to 13 more appointment slots per provider each month. Additionally, the company cites a reported 70% improvement in clinician work-life balance, reducing burnout and enhancing patient interactions.

How Does It Help Clinicians?

One of the spotlight features of the Dragon Copilot is its ability to automatically generate clinical documentation. The model is capable of capturing conversations between doctors and patients, creating specialty-specific notes without requiring manual transcription. However, it does offer customization options, allowing clinicians to save templates, frequently used text, and AI prompts for a more personalized workflow.

Furthermore, AI is not limited to documentation. It can assist with summarizing clinical notes, drafting referral letters, and generating after-visit summaries. The tool can also capture medical orders directly from clinician-patient conversations and enter them into supported EHRs

Can It Retrieve Medical Data?

Dragon Copilot also gives instant access to medical information by querying patient notes and surfacing relevant data. It allows clinicians to use AI to check medication history, retrieve family medical backgrounds, and review recent test results without leaving their workflow. The assistant also pulls in evidence-based medical guidelines and citations to ensure the credibility of its responses.

Is It Secure for Healthcare?

Since healthcare data is sensitive, Microsoft states that Dragon Copilot follows its Secure Future Initiative. The AI includes safeguards to protect data privacy and meet regulatory standards. Microsoft also says it is designed with responsible AI principles to provide accurate and secure results for healthcare professionals.

When Is It Launching?

The company plans to roll out Dragon Copilot in the United States and Canada in May 2025, followed by the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. Microsoft has also indicated plans to expand to other markets currently using its Dragon Medical solutions.
