You Can Now Run Deep Research and Talk to ChatGPT in Projects

ChatGPT Projects

OpenAI has updated the “Projects” feature in ChatGPT, which is designed to help you manage long-term workflows. It acts as a smart workspace where you can group chat, upload reference files, and apply tailored instructions. Now, this feature is equipped with deeper integrations, more tools, and mobile improvements. Here’s everything you need to know about:

What’s New in the June 2025 Update?

The latest update brings a bunch of new features that claim to make Projects more powerful for users who rely on ChatGPT for extended tasks like research, planning, writing, and team collaboration. Some of the key improvements include:

  • Deep Research: Projects can now run multi-step research that draws from both the project’s context (such as files, chats, and instructions) and public web sources. This allows for more comprehensive answers and insights tailored to the user’s specific goals.
  • Voice Mode: You can now tap the microphone icon in any project chat to talk hands-free or ask questions about uploaded files.
  • Chat Sharing: It’s now possible to share a single chat from a project using a unique URL. Shared chats remain isolated, and no files, instructions, or other history are exposed.
  • Mobile Upgrades: ChatGPT’s mobile app now allows you to upload files and switch models directly within a project. To use these features, mobile users will have to update to the latest app version.
  • Smarter Memory: For Plus and Pro users, ChatGPT’s memory can now reference past chats within a project, keeping responses on-topic and reducing repetitive context-setting.
  • Simpler Project Creation: Any existing chat can be converted into a project directly from the sidebar, or you can drag and drop chats into new or existing projects.

Plans, Limits, and Admin Controls

OpenAI allows unlimited projects per user, with each project supporting up to 20 files. On the admin side, Projects follow the same controls, data retention policies, and security standards as the rest of ChatGPT:

  • Feature Access: Tools like Voice Mode or Deep Research can be enabled or disabled at the workspace level.
  • Data Policies: Projects inherit data retention and residency settings from the user’s workspace.
  • Security: Encryption, access control, and audit logging are the same as regular ChatGPT chats.
