Verdict

GLPI suits IT teams that want tickets, asset inventory and ITIL processes in one tool. It is more than a customer support desk needs, and SAML or OAuth sign-in takes a plugin.

Best for

Internal IT teams that track tickets alongside hardware, software and contracts

Not for

Teams that only need a simple customer support inbox

Pros

  • Native inventory of computers and software since version 10
  • Incident, problem and change management follow ITIL
  • Profiles and entities control what each user can see and do
  • Every change to an item is kept in its History tab

Cons

  • The OAuth SSO plugin needs a paid GLPI Network subscription
  • Only MySQL and MariaDB are supported
  • The install docs do not cover GLPI 12 yet

Free vs paid editions

What you get when you self-host, and what needs a paid plan.

The GPL edition includes the helpdesk, asset inventory, CMDB, contracts and projects, with no limit on users or assets. GLPI Network for self-hosted installs starts at €100 a month for up to 10 technicians and 500 assets, and adds level 3 support and Network-only plugins such as OAuth SSO. GLPI Network Cloud starts at €19 per technician a month, excluding VAT.

Self-hosting GLPI

GLPI 12 needs PHP 8.3 to 8.5 and MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.11+ on Apache, Nginx, lighttpd or IIS; the official docs give no CPU or RAM figures.

  • Ready in 84 seconds on a cloud Ubuntu 24.04 server (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM) with the official glpi/glpi image and its example compose file, image downloads included. GLPI created its database on first start, with no setup wizard.
  • At idle, GLPI used about 181 MB of RAM and MySQL about 633 MB, so the database is most of the footprint.
  • We created three tickets and answered one with a follow-up. The ticket form is the full ITIL one, with type, category, urgency, impact and priority.
  • A fresh install has four default accounts, glpi, tech, normal and post-only, with well-known passwords. Change them before anyone else can reach the server.
  • The dashboard and ticket counters show demonstration data on a new install until you turn it off, so ignore those numbers at first.
Commands we ran, from the official GLPI Docker example
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/glpi-project/docker-images/main/docker-compose.example.yml -o docker-compose.yml
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/glpi-project/docker-images/main/.env.example -o .env
# Change GLPI_DB_PASSWORD in .env, and publish the port on localhost only
sed -i 's|"80:80"|"127.0.0.1:8082:80"|' docker-compose.yml
docker compose up -d
# GLPI installs its database on first start. Sign in, then change the
# passwords of the default accounts: glpi, tech, normal and post-only.

What you can do with GLPI

Internal IT helpdesk

Employees log requests and incidents, and technicians work them by queue with SLAs.

Hardware and software inventory

The inventory agent reports each computer's hardware and installed software, so the asset list stays current.

Software licence tracking

Licences are linked to installations, so you can check how many seats are in use.

Contracts and warranties

Purchase orders, warranty dates, depreciation and supplier contracts are stored against each asset.

Change management

Planned changes are reviewed and approved, with links to the affected assets and related incidents.

Several sites or clients

Entities keep each site or client separate, with its own users, assets and tickets.
