MailerLite Review Methodology
Geekflare tested MailerLite by exploring its email automation features, campaign creation tools, and landing page creation. We evaluated usability, template customization, and analytics. User feedback was reviewed to provide a detailed and unbiased assessment of MailerLite’s performance and reliability.
What is MailerLite?
MailerLite is a pocket-friendly email marketing tool founded in 2010 by Ilma Tiki, and is headquartered in San Francisco, California.
It provides a user-friendly way to set up and manage email marketing campaigns with automation capabilities via workflows, A/B testing, and segmentation, making it a popular choice among email marketers and agencies.
With over a decade of working experience in the content industry, I learned that email marketing is necessary for businesses to grow. They generate excellent ROI, significantly impacting small and medium businesses. In fact, in 2023, the email marketing revenue hit $7 billion and is projected to reach $37.5 billion by 2032.
Considering these figures, it’s imperative for new businesses to adopt email marketing strategies for long-term, sustainable growth. Inevitably, MailerLite is mentioned in the conversation, known to offer an intuitive solution for leveraging this channel.
MailerLite offers more than email marketing capabilities—it allows landing page creators to host pages via MailerLite or external domains and provides a beginner-friendly drag-and-drop builder. You also get working templates for websites, newsletters, and landing pages (only on paid plans).
Due to these features, MailerLite servers the following audiences:
- Small business owners
- eCommerce merchants
- Bloggers
- Digital marketers
But is it worth the hype? To understand this, let’s first check out how MailerLite works, after which I’ll discuss its features, benefits, limitations, and more.
How Does MailerLite Work?
MailerLite has multiple features worth covering—email campaigns, landing page creation, the popup builder, and more. Its highly intuitive interface, coupled with automation, helps save a lot of time and effort.
Before you can do anything with MailerLite, you’ll need to verify your email and also agree to their Anti-Spam Policy.

Note: If you don’t have a MailerLite account, you can create one for free and take advantage of its 30-day free trial (with no credit card requirement).
Creating and Managing MailerLite Campaigns
To create a campaign, click on “Campaigns” and then “Create”.

Now, it’ll ask you to choose the campaign type. The available options include:
- Regular campaign
- A/B split campaign
- RSS campaign
- Auto resend campaign
- Multivariate campaign

Each of these have their own use cases. For example, choose a regular campaign to create and send emails to your subscribers. The A/B split campaign lets you experiment with two variants, whereas the Multivariate campaign lets you work with multiple email variants.
For the purpose of demonstration, I’ll choose the “Regular campaign” option.
Note: If you haven’t authenticated your domain, the wizard will ask you to do so. You can connect your domain to your website or manually authenticate it.
In the campaign details tab, you’ll need to fill in details such as:
- Campaign name
- Subject
- Sender
- Preheader
- Language
- Tracking settings
- Recipients

MailerLite helps to generate unique Subjects using its Subject line generator. Here, you can change the tone of voice, the promotion type, or email language.
Instantly, it prompts you to email design, where you can create one from scratch, create a template gallery (such as eCommerce, black Friday, holiday, events), or use email design from recent emails.

And if you choose to start from scratch, you can select from the following:
- Drag & drop editor
- Rich-text editor
- Custom HTML editor
Depending on your expertise, you can opt for your preferred option. However, for most users, I suggest the Drag & drop editor as it is easy to use and helps keep your campaign streamlined, especially if you want to make changes later.
For faster campaign creation, check out the ready-made templates in Template Gallery. These templates are easy to use and responsive. You can select them as per your needs and edit them accordingly.

Once you choose a template, it’ll open up the drag-and-drop editor. I like the editor’s simplicity and access to different elements such as Navigation, Elements, Content, Sections, Gallery, E-commerce, etc. All these elements are neatly packed on the left-hand menu.
On the right side of the editor, it has two sections:
- Template → where you can change the layout, font, background, content style, button style, and other settings.
- Settings → apply brand settings by changing the logo, color, menu items, and social links.

Things that I noticed with the Drag & drop editor worth mentioning:
- You can directly edit and change text on the fly.
- Allows you to generate creative AI content using prompts, which are accessible via each element.
- You can move elements freely across the design.
- Saves small block elements under the new template name for reuse.
- You can preview the email newsletter on the browser.
- Allows you to alter image and text location side by side with one click.
Basically, you get all the tools and features needed to create a great newsletter. The AI helps to create clickable subject lines to create a copy that is worth reading, with engaging CTAs.
However, it doesn’t offer a way to generate AI images, which is okay, considering that most email newsletter images need to be customized based on brand voice, email newsletter purpose, and target audience.
I like how MailerLite improves productivity and efficiency. With the drag-and-drop builder, I created a finalized newsletter in 15 minutes. That’s impressive!
Additionally, you can check the newsletter in preview mode or send a test email.
Note: You’ll need to confirm your email and answer questions related to your campaign before you can proceed. MailerLite can take up to 24-48 hours to review your confirmation request.
Here’s how my final newsletter looks!

You can schedule emails to send later or based on timezone. It also supports instant sending or smart sending (available on advanced plans).
Creating Email Automation Workflow
Email marketing requires careful planning and execution.
A successful email campaign must add variations to their emails to achieve the target (such as making the user purchase a product).
To help simplify the process, MailerLite supports email automation workflow. These workflows require you to provide a sequence of actions based on triggers.
For example, if the user signs up a new account, you want to send an automated welcome email. Next, you can wait a few days and send him details about your services or product.
Once the subscriber clicks open the email (tracked via link triggers), you can send him another email or a reminder email if he doesn’t.
To help create automations faster, MailerLite offers access to 15 simple and advanced templates.
For example, you can use the Simple welcome email template, which offers one or two steps. The Advanced welcome email template helps you to follow up with preference emails and then target them with campaign offers based on the subscriber’s input.

Some of the other notable automation email templates that MailerLite supports include:
- Simple welcome email
- Win back inactive subscribers
- New promotion
- Online course
- Special wishes
- Membership renewal
- Abandoned cart
- Purchase specific product
Now, coming to the automation workflow creator, I found it easy to use. You can add new elements easily, including conditions, actions, webhook, delay, and A/B testing, according to your email strategy.

Creating Forms and Pop-ups
MailerLite is a complete email marketing tool. This means you can also create forms and pop-ups to capture new subscribers or carry out promotions.
To create these, go to “Forms” from the side menu. Once there, you’ll see three options:
- Pop-ups: create desirable custom popups with access to pre-designed templates.
- Embedded forms: create and place custom GDPR-friendly subscriber forms on-site
- Promotions: offers 13 professionally designed customizable templates with support for different pop-up types.
I went ahead and created a pop-up. Like the newsletter creation process, you need to follow a wizard where you enter necessary details, select a subscriber base, choose from available templates (or start from scratch), and edit it via its drag-and-drop editor.

Under the hood, MailerLite uses the same drag-and-drop builder for pop-ups but offers a different set of elements such as countdown, the ability to change style, or the ability to choose pop-up type (including Lightbox, Slide In, Half Screen, Full Screen, and Floating).

Additionally, it supports teaser creation. It is a small notification that peeks out from the page’s edge and catches the user’s attention without interrupting the reader’s focus. According to me, it’s handy for sites that aim to build a superior user experience.
I found the pop-ups to be highly customizable, with the option to set triggers, schedule them, and set the frequency to the same user.
For easy integration, it offers support for WordPress and Shopify via plugins/apps. However, for custom sites, you’ll need to insert JavaScript snippets manually.
Promotional pop-ups follow a similar creation process but have limited design options (13 currently) that you can use and customize.
Create Landing Pages and Websites
MailerLite provides an easy way to create landing pages and websites.
A landing page is a single page that aims to make the visitor take action, such as subscribing to a service, buying a product, or subscribing to a mailer list. It’s one of the best ways to market your product or service.
To create a landing page or website with MailerLite, you must go to Sites. Now, click on “Create” to start building.
The process of building a landing page or website with MailerLite is similar to creating an email automation, email newsletter, or popup. You select any of the available templates, customize them via drag-and-drop builder, and publish them to your audience.

The landing page builder is advanced compared to other builders that MailerLite offers (for popups, newsletters, and automation workflow). It provides all necessary elements, such as social, product, and accordion, along with columns to break each section as per your needs.
You can change styles or use pre-made sections like People, Social Proof, and Gallery to insert them to the site or landing page quickly.

Similarly, the website builder offers more options, including access to product blocks and the ability to create pages. However, it is rather simple compared to other dedicated website builders like Wix or Hostinger Website Builder.
Both landing pages and websites support basic SEO optimization and custom analytics for easy tracking.

The builder also supports eCommerce elements. These are highly customizable, with options to change color, font, and overall newsletter style. Users can also generate creative AI content via a prompt.

With MailerLite, you get access to pre-defined email templates. At the time of writing, MailerLite offers 94 email templates. These templates aim to solve particular needs and, hence, are categorized. These categories include Business, Black Friday, E-Commerce, Holiday, and so on.
Users can preview the template before using it. However, once chosen, changing the template requires starting over.
During my testing, I found templates to be easily customizable, with plenty of options available for each element.
Automation Workflows
MailerLite excels at automation workflow as it offers common automation templates and an easy-to-use automation builder. It tracks triggers and delays to jump to the next step of the custom automation workflow.
I loved this feature as it streamlines the email marketing process. The template goes a long way to fast-track common scenarios, such as sending a welcome email to new users. Furthermore, you can also use A/B split testing to find what works for your audience.
Landing Pages and Signup Forms
MailerLite provides tools to help you create landing pages and sign-up forms. Both of these are critical aspects of email marketing, especially if you want to capture new emails.
I manually created both landing pages and signup forms. Both were easy to make with the help of drag-and-drop builders, offering specific elements and offering specific elements along with deployment and customization options.
For example, for popups, you get elements such as a countdown and the ability to choose popup type. Landing page design has access to more options with elements like accordion, social, and the option to set columns.

MailerLite offers excellent built-in analytics and reporting capabilities. You can access most of the metrics directly from the dashboard, including:

For example, for campaigns, it shows receipts, opened rate, clicked rate, and CTOR. Users can view the report to get additional information.

All these metrics help you to improve your campaign performance. You can compare campaigns within a specific time period or dive into subscribers’ reports to learn average open, subscribe/unsubscribe rates, or click rates.

Expert Review on MailerLite

Stephen Do
MailerLite is an excellent tool, particularly for small to medium-sized e-commerce businesses. Many Shopify merchants use it successfully, especially when they’re just starting with email marketing. It’s affordable, intuitive, and offers the essentials like automation, segmentation, and landing pages, which are critical for driving conversions. It integrates really well with Shopify. Syncing customer data to create targeted campaigns is seamless, and if you’re running affiliate programs like we do with UpPromote, you can easily segment and engage affiliates with custom workflows.
I wouldn’t say it’s the best choice for more advanced email marketing needs. Some merchants outgrow its simplicity once they want features like multi-channel personalization or predictive analytics, which tools like Klaviyo handle better. But for new businesses, MailerLite’s balance of affordability and functionality is perfect. I’ve recommended it to clients who needed to set up quick email campaigns without spending hours learning a complex platform. One client, a Shopify merchant selling handmade candles, was able to grow their email list by 30% in just three months using MailerLite’s pop-up forms and automation. It’s practical and gets the job done.
Who Shouldn’t Use MailerLite?
The following audience might not find MailerLite optimized for their needs:
- Large enterprises that need advanced features and tools to implement and manage complex marketing workflows.
- Users that need a deep-level CRM or analytics integration.
MailerLite Privacy
MailerLite is fully GDPR compliant, which makes privacy a strong suit for the platform. This enables them to provide GDPR-friendly forms to their customers.
To meet GDPR requirements, MailerLite offers DPA (Data Processing Addendum), which is crucial to match industry standards.
You also get GDPR-friendly tools and features to ensure compliance. However, it is also up to the user to ensure GDPR compliance by adding the necessary elements, such as privacy policy links to pages, adding custom consent fields, properly letting people know what they’re signing up for, and giving subscribers an easy way to opt out.
MailerLite Verdict
MailerLite is an affordable yet feature-rich email marketing platform. It provides a beginner-friendly approach to creating newsletters, landing pages, popups, forms, and websites using its drag-and-drop builder and template-rich library. Furthermore, it has sufficient automation capabilities to handle slightly complex campaigns.
I’m a big fan of its “Forever Free” plan. It invites new businesses to get started and then grow as per their needs and budgets. And, if you’re an established business, you can take advantage of its 30-day free trial to see if it fits your requirements.
Feature-wise, I found its A/B testing and analytical capabilities useful. It helps marketers optimize their campaigns for the best results. It also offers plenty of integrations, which ensures smooth operations across multiple tools.
MailerLite’s eCommerce support is top-notch as well, with eCommerce-focused features. You can easily integrate payment gateways or run campaigns for converting subscribers to buyers.
However, I didn’t like MailerLite’s policies, as they’re strict and restrictive. While its aim is to improve email deliverability and reduce spam, it can impact campaign launch times for businesses that want to get started quickly.
Another aspect that I think MailerLite needs to improve on is AI integration. At the moment, it only offers AI text generation.
Overall, MailerLite receives the Geekflare Value Award for its affordable price point while offering a complete email marketing solution. Its free tier is undoubtedly one of the best value-laden offerings in the market, and is a must-try if you’re a new business looking to start various types of email campaigns!
