NotebookLM Prompts You Can Use Right Now for Better Summaries

NotebookLM (6)

The NotebookLM team has shared some prompt ideas that you can try to customize your audio overviews on the platform. It will give you more control over how AI summarises research notes. The company shared these suggestions in a tweet, encouraging users to experiment with the customization feature.

Here are the prompt examples shared by the NotebookLM team:

  • “I’m already an expert on X and very curious about Y.”
  • “I’m preparing for an exam that will cover X, Y, and Z – summarise all the relevant parts.”
  • “My team works on X; what is most useful for us here?”

Apart from this, the NotebookLM team also asked users to share their own custom prompts as well. In a follow-up interaction on the same thread, one user asked for a simpler way to control the length of summaries, saying they currently have to create a “crazy prompt” just to do that. Where the NotebookLM team responded by saying that length control is already supported, asking the user to share the exact prompt being used.

Recent NotebookLM Updates

Earlier this month, NotebookLM announced the public sharing capabilities for notebooks. This allows you to share your AI-generated research, study guides, or project summaries with anyone via a single link. However, editing rights remain limited to the original creator. The update has made it easier for students, researchers, and teams to showcase their work or collaborate with external audiences.

Apart from that, the company is also working on adding more visual elements to the platform. For example, back in May at Google I/O 2025, the company introduced Video Overviews for NotebookLM, turning multimedia inputs like notes, PDFs, and images into visual presentations. This feature aims to improve how you learn about complex information. However, the feature is not available to the public yet. But it’s expected to arrive soon.
